Softability created a smart glass concept from Pyylahti Oy´s Scantronic Electronic Blasting System. Smart glass concept enables full hands-free working. This concept was presented for the first time publicly in the EFEE World Conference in Helsinki. Softability will continue to be a part of Pyylahti Oy´s patented blasting system´s development also in the future.

Pyylahti Ltd. is a Finnish producer and importer of explosives and detonators. Pyylahti has expanded its business to digital detonator production and developing digital detonators peripheral devices. Modern Pyylahti Scantronic Electronic Blasting System is an example of branching out to a digital world.

Every blasting needs a blasting plan that has the borehole location information, as well as delay times for all the digital detonators. This blasting plan can be created either using a phone or laptop. Digital detonators are then set in every borehole in the quarry, based on the blasting plan. At the moment digital detonators IDs are recognized and validated with a mobile phone only. As a development idea, Softability extended this mobile device use to a smart glass concept, for full hands-free working.

Working hands free enhances blasting business

The idea behind Softability´s smart glass concept is to enhance chargers work by releasing both hands to be used for the task at hand. In the current system for example charger needs to tap the digital detonators NFC tag with a mobile phone so that it is recognized and validated. We used voice-controlled RealWear HMT-1 smart glasses to replace phone recognition in our smart glass concept.

Mobile phone will still work as a central processing unit. Smart glasses are used to show the blasting plan, recognize and validate quarry ́s location, and also to recognize digital detonators with QR codes, NFC tags or manual ID input. After these steps the blasting plan can be authorized and send to the detonator, and the blast can be completed. Smart glasses will also record the whole process from start to finish, including all user observations and actions with a built-in video camera. This video will be stored in the device’s own memory as well as archived in the cloud for possible later use.

“Working with Softability was flexible and efficient. We don´t share the same knowhow than they do, but we managed to communicate on unfamiliar and difficult technical problems well enough to have the courage to take the project on action. The project proceeded just the way it is supposed to – we remain in schedule and got a great start to continue development based on the concept.”

“I warmly recommend Softability to all new products developing companies.” – Tapio Laakko, CEO, Pyylahti Oy
